Teaching someone their first beat is a different job from coaching a gigging drummer. It's the one I'm set up for — and I was a beginner recently enough to remember exactly which bits are hard.

What lessons look like
Playing something real from the first half hour.
No theory drills before you're allowed to touch the kit. You sit down, you learn the pattern above, and you build outward from there.

You leave with your own gear
Turn up with nothing — the kit and sticks are here. And when you start lessons, you get your own pair of sticks and a practice pad to take home, included. Progress happens between lessons, not just during them, so I'd rather you had the means to practise from day one.

Bring a track you want to play. Most pop and rock songs are built from a handful of patterns, and it's far easier to stay motivated when you recognise what you're playing.

Hello — I'm Jorell.
I've been playing for six years. It started on a borrowed practice pad — no kit, no lessons, just a rubber pad on my bedroom floor and a lot of repetition.
Since then I've played in a band called SOLARA, and these days I work as a session drummer for other artists.
Six years isn't a lifetime behind a kit, and that's exactly why I teach beginners. I still remember what the first month actually feels like — hands and feet refusing to cooperate, a beat that sounds fine in your head and nothing like that when you play it, and not knowing whether you're doing it wrong or just doing it slowly. Someone who started at four often can't remember that part. I can, because it wasn't long ago.
So I know which bits are genuinely difficult, which bits only feel difficult, and how to get you through both without making you feel stupid for finding it hard. I teach from five years old up through adults, and I keep my rates well below the big chain schools — starting shouldn't be the expensive part.

Questions people ask first
Before you book.
Do I need to buy a kit, sticks or a practice pad?
No. The kit and sticks are here for lessons, so you can turn up empty-handed. And once you start lessons properly, I give every new student their own pair of sticks and a practice pad to take home — included, not an add-on. That's everything you need to practise at home without buying a kit.
How much are lessons?
Less than you'd pay at one of the big chain music schools — message me and I'll give you the exact rate for the lesson length you're after. The 30-minute trial is S$15, so you can find out whether drumming is for you without committing to a term of lessons.
I've never played any instrument. Is that a problem?
That's who these lessons are for. You don't need to read music and you don't need any background — the first lesson starts from how to hold the sticks. I was a complete beginner six years ago, so I know how it feels to sit down at a kit for the first time.
How old does my child need to be?
I teach from five years old upward. At the younger end it's mostly about being able to reach the pedals and stay focused for the lesson — book a trial and I'll give you an honest answer about whether they're ready.
Do you teach adults?
Yes, and plenty of adult beginners are more nervous than the kids are. There's no age at which it's too late to start, and nobody is watching.
Where are lessons held?
At my home studio near Beauty World, Bukit Timah — about a five-minute walk from Beauty World MRT. I send the exact address once your trial is booked.
What happens in the trial lesson?
Thirty minutes for S$15, and no commitment beyond that. You sit at the kit, learn the beat from the top of this page, and get a straight answer about whether lessons are a good fit. If it isn't for you, that's a fine outcome — no follow-up, no pressure.
